Community Thanksgiving Dinner set for Nov. 23

Friday, November 18, 2022 - The 8th Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner is set to take place at the Sallisaw Middle School cafeteria on November 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Community partners in Sequoyah County work hard each year to make this meal available for the entire community at no charge.

KI BOIS County Coordinator Melissa Lowe said, "Everyone is invited to come out to this year's community Thanksgiving dinner. Whether you come alone or bring the entire family, we would love to see you there."

The annual Thanksgiving Dinner was founded eight years ago to ensure that no one went without a hot Thanksgiving meal. The idea behind the event was to create a traditional, sit down family-style meal complete with fall décor and the fellowship that comes along with this season.

"Those attending will receive restaurant style service. Someone will be there to fill your drinks, and desserts will come directly to your table, allowing you to choose your all-time favorite," Lowe added.

The meal is prepared by the outstanding cooks of Sallisaw Public School. These ladies volunteer their time to cook the meal each year during their time off during Thanksgiving break and are very much appreciated.

"I don’t know what we would do without the support of the Sallisaw school administration and their amazing cooks," Lowe said.

The KATS bus will transport those living within the Sallisaw city limits to and from the dinner at no charge. To contact the KATS bus, please call 918-775-7433.

A huge need this year is for donations of desserts. Donations can be dropped off at the Sallisaw Middle School cafeteria on the morning of the event or picked up by the event organizers.

Lowe stated, "The only thing different this year is that volunteers will not be accepted on the day of the event. We are very grateful for the volunteers we’ve had in the past, but this year we would like for them to just attend, relax, and just enjoy themselves."

Each year, community partners wear matching Thanksgiving T-shirts. Due to the popularity of these shirts, a direct link has been provided for individual t-shirt purchases. The t-shirts are $15, and with each purchase, a portion of the proceeds will be given back to the organization to help with 2023’s dinner. The link to purchase your 2022 Thanksgiving shirt is listed below:

If you would like additional information or to donate a dessert, please contact Lowe at 918-776-0848.

The 2022 Thanksgiving dinner is sponsored by KI BOIS, MIX 105.1, People Inc., the TSET HLP, the Sallisaw NOW Coalition, the Sequoyah County Boys and Girls Club, the Health and Wellness Center, the Cherokee Nation, CREOKS, and Sallisaw School and cooks.
