Spruce Up Sallisaw and Fall Clean Up Set to Help Residents Tackle Junk

Saturday, September 26, 2026 – The City of Sallisaw is gearing up for Spruce Up Sallisaw & Fall Clean Up, a week-long community improvement effort designed to make the city cleaner, safer, and more attractive.

As part of the effort, City of Sallisaw departments will work together throughout the week on projects across the community that may fall outside their normal day-to-day responsibilities.

Residents can expect to see city crews working on neighborhood cleanup, drainage and ditch improvements, brush and debris removal, mowing and vegetation management, right-of-way cleanup, beautification projects, and other maintenance efforts.

The goal of Spruce Up Sallisaw & Fall Clean Up is to bring city departments together, focus resources where they are needed, and make a visible difference throughout the community.

One of the highlights of the cleanup effort will be "Chunk Your Junk Days," giving eligible Sallisaw residents an opportunity to dispose of unwanted household items.

The event will be located in front of the city buildings on Quesenbury Street.

Chunk Your Junk Days are for Sallisaw residents who need to get rid of unwanted household items that can be safely lifted and unloaded by one person. The cleanup is open to residential utility customers who live within the Sallisaw city limits. Residents must bring their current City of Sallisaw utility bill for verification.

Once at the event, residents will unload their items, with city staff on-site supervising and directing the disposal process.

Residents will be responsible for unloading their materials into the appropriate dumpsters and separating items as required. All materials must come from residential properties and must be easily handled without equipment.

Loads must fit in a normal half-ton pickup bed without side rails. Trailers up to 16 feet with no side rails will also be allowed. However, all loads are subject to being turned away based on their contents or weight.

Residents are encouraged to bag items whenever possible and separate metal from other materials.

Items that may be accepted include:

·        Bagged leaves and small plants

·        Metal

·        Wood and lumber

·        Landscaping materials

·        Furniture and bedding

·        Cans

·        Bundled cardboard

·        Small appliances, provided coolant or refrigerant has been removed

There are also several items that will not be accepted, including brushes, construction debris, shingles, and commercial trash, as well as hazardous materials and liquids.

In addition, appliances with coolant or refrigerant systems still connected, tires, and other heavy rubber materials will not be accepted.

City officials encourage residents to take advantage of the cleanup effort while also being mindful of the rules to help make the process safe and efficient.
