Thursday, November 20, 2025 — The Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public about a phone scam circulating in the area, where callers are pretending to be deputies and falsely claiming that the person they’re calling has an outstanding warrant. The scammers then pressure victims to make an immediate payment to avoid being arrested.
Officials stress that the warrant threat is a well-known scam and that law enforcement will never call to demand money, threaten arrest, or ask for payment through gift cards, wire transfers, Cash App, Venmo, or any other instant-transfer method.
The Sheriff’s Office advises that anyone who receives a call like this should hang up immediately. Residents are urged not to send any money and not to provide any personal or financial information under any circumstances. After disconnecting, individuals should contact the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office directly to report the call and verify that no legitimate issue exists.
Authorities are asking the community to help spread the word to friends, neighbors, and family members, especially elders who are often targeted. Scammers rely on fear and confusion to trick victims, and officials say awareness is the best protection.
