Sequoyah County Proclaims October Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Monday, September 28, 2026 — The Sequoyah County Board of Commissioners unanimously proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Sequoyah County.

The proclamation was approved Monday during the commissioners’ weekly meeting at the Sequoyah County Courthouse. Members of the local Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and Coordinated Community Response (CCR) were present for the proclamation.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness, recognize survivors, and highlight resources and community efforts focused on safety and prevention.

The observance began with a national “Day of Unity” in October 1981 and was officially recognized by Congress as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1989.

Today, the month focuses on safety, support, prevention, awareness and standing in solidarity with survivors.

Local SART and CCR members work with community partners to increase awareness of available resources and strengthen the community’s response to domestic and sexual violence.
