Sequoyah County Historical Society Hosting 9/11 Remembrance Event

Thursday, May 14, 2026 —Nearly 25 years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, the Sequoyah County Historical Society will host a special community program centered on memories and experiences from that historic day.

The program will be held at 2 p.m., May 17, at the Sequoyah County Historical Society.

Fort Smith resident Carmen Taylor will speak about what she saw, heard, and experienced while visiting New York City on September 11, 2001, during the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Taylor photographed the moment the second plane struck the South Tower, capturing an image that later received national recognition and became part of the historical record of the events of September 11.

The program will feature a selection of printed photographs and additional materials connected to Taylor’s experience in New York City that day.

As the nation approaches the 25th anniversary of the attacks, Taylor said she hopes the event will encourage others to reflect on and share their own memories and perspectives from September 11.

“This is not a formal presentation,” Taylor said. “It’s an opportunity to remember, talk, and listen to one another.”

The event is open to the public.

The Sequoyah County Historical Society is located at 200 E. Creek Ave. in Sallisaw.
