Tuesday, February 3, 2026 — The Sequoyah County Board of Commissioners formally declared February as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month during their meeting Monday, following a request from Sequoyah County Investigator Cindy Smith.
Smith spoke to the commissioners about the importance of early education and prevention efforts for teens and their families.
“This month is super important,” Smith said. “We want to address this early, rather than waiting until teens grow into adults and have been in unhealthy relationships for a long time. By educating kids and parents now about the signs of teen dating violence, our county can stay ahead and prevent more serious situations in the future.”
As part of the awareness campaign, the Sheriff’s Department is partnering with local schools to distribute informational posters designed by team member and Victim Service Specialist Sarah Ridinger.
The colorful posters include a QR code that directs students to an educational webpage about teen dating violence. The site helps teens identify unhealthy relationships, access resources, and find answers to common questions.
“We’ve received strong support from local schools in the county, with no school declining to participate,” Smith added.
