Monday, April 20, 2026 —The Sequoyah County Board of Commissioners officially proclaimed April 19-25 as National Crime Victims’ Rights Week during their regular meeting on Monday, following a request from Sequoyah County Investigator Cindy Smith.
Smith addressed commissioners by sharing national crime statistics and emphasizing the importance of supporting victims and encouraging reporting.
According to Smith, national reporting data currently available is based on 2024 numbers, which typically lag by about two years. She explained that every 25 seconds, someone in the United States becomes the victim of a violent crime.
“That equals around 13 million people a year who are victims of violent crimes,” Smith said. “When you include violent property crimes such as home invasions and similar offenses, those numbers increase to nearly 39 million victims annually.”
While the statistics remain alarming, Smith noted there has been progress. “The upside is that since 2022, we have seen a downward trend in those types of crimes. That shows the importance of the work being done today by law enforcement, community partners, and people willing to come forward and make reports,” Smith added.
Smith explained that reporting crimes can be especially difficult in cases involving domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and other emotionally traumatic situations.
Smith stated, “Some of those reports are not easy for people to make, but those reports are critical in helping victims receive support and in holding offenders accountable.”
She also noted an increase in reporting involving violent crimes against youth ages 12 to 17, including child abuse and sexual assault cases.
Smith thanked county leaders for their continued partnership and support of local law enforcement efforts.
National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is observed annually to raise awareness about victims’ rights, recognize the services available to those impacted by crime, and honor the professionals and volunteers who assist.
