Tuesday, August 29, 2023 - The Sequoyah County Boys and Girls Club is growing across the county. The club recently announced the addition of two new clubs in Sequoyah County.
The first unit is located at Roland Public School and opened earlier this month.
Roland’s Club offers before-school care from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and after-school care from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Roland Schools unit director Melisia Cole stated, "There has already been a lot of interest in the club from the community."
The second unit will be located at Vian Public School and is planned to open shortly after Labor Day.
Vian’s club is currently in its planning stages, so club hours are still in the works. The Vian School Board is extremely supportive of the organization moving into their school system, with the school board approving the new unit on August 14 during their regularly scheduled board meeting.
Club programming for both units will start promptly after school is released. Students first receive a snack before receiving help with homework. After homework is completed, one of the many programs that fall into categories such as academic success, character, citizenship, and healthy lifestyles takes place.
These programs include but are not limited to Positive Action, Smart Moves, Career Launch, Arts & Crafts, Science Discovery, Fun & Fitness, and Diabetes Prevention (TRAIL).
CEO of The Boys and Girls Club of Sequoyah County, Laura Kuykendall, stated, "We are excited for this opportunity to serve students at both of these locations. Our goal is to provide relief to families through our educational after-school programming so that children can experience fun while learning in a safe environment."
The Boys and Girls Club of Sequoyah County also has club sites at Liberty Elementary-Sallisaw campus, Brushy, Moffett, and the main Sallisaw unit campus located at 208 S. Main St.
