Sallisaw to Honor Fallen Heroes at Memorial Day Ceremony

Thursday, May 22, 2025 — The community of Sallisaw will come together in solemn remembrance on Monday, May 26, for the annual Memorial Day Ceremony, held at the Sallisaw City Cemetery. The event, sponsored by American Legion Post 27, will begin with a moving program to honor those who gave their lives in service to the United States.

The ceremony will be guided by Marty Green, of the Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce, serving as Master of Ceremonies. The program will open with a prayer led by American Legion Chaplain Joe Stamps, followed by welcoming remarks from Post Commander Jared Larsen and Sallisaw Mayor Ernie Martens.

Jared Larsen and Aaron Larsen will raise the American flag, followed by Shaylan Steeley's stirring rendition of the National Anthem. Paula Mouzakis will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, and Linda Jackson will conduct a special wreath-laying ceremony in memory of SSgt. Gary Jackson, U.S. Army.

Shaylan Steeley will offer musical tributes throughout the program, setting a reflective tone for the day. Marty Green will also introduce the ceremony’s featured speaker, Steve Barrett, Superintendent of Sallisaw Schools, who will deliver remarks commemorating the bravery and sacrifice of American service members.

Following the guest address and a final musical selection, Chaplain Joe Stamps will return to lead the closing prayer. A twenty-one-gun salute will be performed by the American Legion Post 27 Honor Guard, followed by the haunting notes of Taps, played by Sallisaw High School’s Cooper Ellis. The ceremony will conclude with final words from Commander Jared Larsen.

This Memorial Day, the community is invited to pause, reflect, and remember the true cost of freedom—and those who paid the ultimate price.
