Monday, December 12, 2022 - Sallisaw Mayor Ernie Martens and Chief of Police Terry Franklin drew no opponents last week during the filing period for the upcoming primary election. Both will retain their positions for an additional three year term.
Several candidates submitted declarations of candidacy for Board of Education seats in Sequoyah County.
The secretary of the Sequoyah County Election Board, Cindy Osborn, said, "Candidates were required to complete and submit their candidacy papers to the County Election Board by Wednesday, December 7 at 5 p.m."
On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, a primary election will be held, and any board of education seat that had more than two candidates submit applications will be placed on the ballot.
If just one candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, that person will be chosen as the elected official. In the event that no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two candidates will face off on April 4, 2023, during general elections.
In the event that only two candidates submit applications for the same open Board of Education post, those applicants’ names will be listed on the ballot for the general election in April.
