Sallisaw Main Street to Honor Steve Davis on October 10

Sunday, September 13, 2026 — A Sallisaw hometown legend will soon be honored with a lasting tribute in the heart of downtown.

Sallisaw Main Street will unveil a new public-art tribute honoring former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback and Sallisaw Black Diamond Steve Davis on Saturday, October 10, at noon in the Pocket Park.

Davis grew up in Sallisaw before going on to become one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in Oklahoma football history. He led the Sooners to back-to-back national championships and finished his career as a starter with an impressive 32-1-1 record.

But organizers say the tribute represents much more than Davis’ accomplishments on the football field.

Commissioned by Sallisaw Main Street and created by award-winning local artist Donnie Poindexter, the artwork celebrates Davis’ athletic career while also honoring his faith, leadership, character, and lifelong connection to his hometown.

The unveiling will take place during the Sallisaw Main Street Fall Festival, bringing together friends, family, former classmates, Black Diamond fans, and Sooner fans for a special celebration of hometown pride.

The timing is also fitting, with the ceremony taking place on Red River Rivalry Saturday, honoring a Sooner great who finished his career undefeated against Texas.

Community members are encouraged to wear their Black Diamond gear or favorite OU crimson and cream as Sallisaw celebrates the life, legacy, and accomplishments of one of its own.

The Pocket Park is located at 124 East Cherokee Avenue in downtown Sallisaw.
