Sallisaw Chamber Highlights Community Projects and Future School Plans

Wednesday August, 19 2026 — The Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce held its August membership luncheon Wednesday, August 19, at the Wheeler Event Center, bringing local business and community leaders together for updates on ongoing projects, member recognition, and a presentation from Sallisaw Public Schools.

The meeting opened with updates on several local initiatives. Jennifer Fokidis provided an update on current Sallisaw Main Street projects, while Lindsie Dyer shared information about the Sequoyah County Boys & Girls Club building project.

Chamber President Eric Carter also reminded members about Sallisaw's upcoming football auction, set for Thursday, August 20, at 6:30 p.m. and to be live-streamed on the MIX 105.1 Facebook page.

All Pro River Valley Realty was recognized as the chamber's August member of the month. Established in 2007, the locally owned real estate company has served Sallisaw and the surrounding River Valley area for nearly two decades. The company has agents licensed in both Oklahoma and Arkansas, allowing it to serve clients across state lines.

The luncheon also included a special recognition. Sallisaw Mayor Marley Abel presented Marty Green with an Honorary Lifetime Chamber Member Award, honoring Green's years of dedicated service to both the Sallisaw Chamber and the community.

The luncheon's keynote presentation was delivered by superintendent of Sallisaw Public Schools, Steve Barrett, who discussed the district's upcoming bond millage renewal and plans for continued investment in local schools and facilities.

Barrett explained that the proposal would continue the existing millage rate as previously approved debt is retired, rather than creating a new tax. He said maintaining the current millage would provide the school district with additional bonding capacity while allowing it to continue planning for future facility needs.

Among the projects discussed were improvements to school and community facilities, including plans for a new auditorium and track. Barrett expressed that the facilities would benefit not only students but also the entire community by providing space for regional competitions, performances, and other events.

Barrett also addressed the rising cost of construction and the importance of making necessary capital investments rather than delaying projects and potentially placing greater financial burdens on future generations.

The presentation also emphasized the broader economic impact of school improvements, including construction jobs, local spending, and continued community development.

Barrett encouraged community members to consider the long-term impact of maintaining a stable millage as Sallisaw Public Schools continues to grow and plan for future needs.
