Monday, July 31, 2023 - The Roland Police Department has just released the dash cam video of a shooting incident that took place Saturday, July 29. The video can be viewed at the link below. ***Strong language warning.

At approximately 4 a.m. Saturday, Roland Police Officer, Brian Simpson, observed a vehicle sitting on the side of Hwy 64 approximately one-fourth of a mile east of the intersection of Roland Rd and Hwy 64. The officer pulled over to see if the vehicle was having mechanical issues or if the driver needed assistance.

As Officer Simpson approached the vehicle, an individual was observed exiting the vehicle on the left side and then walking to the front of the car. The male could be seen moving around as Officer Simpson came to a stop. The individual then began shooting at Officer Simpson as he ran south to a wooded area.

Officer Simpson was not injured during this incident.

Law enforcement quickly set up a perimeter. However, after searching for several hours, the shooter could not be located.

It was later discovered that the shooter's vehicle had been reported stolen to the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Department about 30 minutes prior to Officer Simpson making contact.

During the investigation, Denver Wayne Rowell, (above), a 22-year-old male was identified as the shooter. Later on the same day, Rowell was taken into custody by the Fort Smith Police Department on outstanding warrants.

On Monday, July 31, an arrest warrant was issued for Rowell with numerous felony counts, including four counts of Shooting with Intent to Kill.

Roland Police Department officials stated that they would like to thank the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Muldrow Police Department, Cherokee Marshall Service, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, District 27 Drug Task Force, and Fort Smith Police Department for their assistance.
