Progress Continues on Stanley Collins Aquatics Center and Concessions Project

Friday, June 27, 2025- Significant progress is underway on one of Sallisaw’s most anticipated projects, the Stanley Collins Aquatics Center and concessions complex, a joint initiative between the City of Sallisaw and Sallisaw Public Schools. While the project has evolved from its original design, city and school officials emphasize that their commitment remains firmly focused on quality over speed.

“We’re pushing the contractors to finish, but we’re also pushing for quality,” said Sallisaw City Manager Brian Heverly. Heverly acknowledged the delays but stressed that ensuring a well-built, lasting facility is the top priority.

The new concessions facility is being designed for dual use, serving both the school and the broader community. It will feature restrooms and showers, a family restroom, a full-service concession stand, and a ticket window. Safety remains a core focus, with gated zones separating access points depending on the season.

Sallisaw Public Schools Superintendent Steve Barrett stated, “We’ve redesigned the drainage and plan to power wash and repaint the field house to match the new construction,” Barrett said. These improvements will tie the entire complex together aesthetically and functionally.

Meanwhile, the Stanley Collins Aquatics Center is nearing the final phase of construction, with contractors working through detailed punch lists. The pool will feature a zero-entry beach-style entrance, a large water slide, four swim lanes, a small peninsula area, and a splash pad for additional family fun.

Although the initial goal was to open the pool this summer, city and school leaders have confirmed that an opening in 2025 is unlikely. The current completion date is set for mid-August.

In addition to the pool project, momentum is also building on the city’s upcoming skatepark. According to city officials, 90% of the design is complete, and the project is expected to go out for bids by the end of summer, with construction targeted for this fall.
