Pet Safety Tips During Freezing Temperatures

With freezing temperatures expected this week, pet owners are urged to take extra precautions to keep their furry companions safe and comfortable. Cold weather can pose serious health risks to animals, making proper care essential during extreme cold.

Tips for keeping pets safe during freezing weather include:

  • Bring Pets Indoors – Whenever possible, keep pets inside to shield them from extreme cold.

  • Provide Warm, Protected Shelter – If pets must remain outdoors, ensure a dry, insulated shelter blocking wind. Adding wood shavings, blankets, or straw can help provide extra warmth.

  • Increase Food & Water – Cold weather increases pets’ calorie needs as they burn more energy to maintain body heat. Extra feedings may be necessary, and pets should always have access to fresh, unfrozen water. Using heated water bowls can help prevent freezing.

  • Beware of Winter Hazards

    • Antifreeze – Even a small amount is highly toxic to pets. Store chemicals securely and clean up spills immediately.

    • Heat Sources – Keep pets away from fireplaces and space heaters to prevent burns or accidental fires.

  • Watch for Signs of Cold Stress – Symptoms such as shivering, exhaustion, and whining may indicate that a pet is too cold. If these signs appear, bring the animal indoors immediately and consult a veterinarian.

By taking these precautions, pet owners can help ensure their animals remain safe, healthy, and comfortable during the winter months.
