Friday, August 15, 2025 - The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) has officially approved a new Extreme Heat Policy, which goes into effect immediately. The policy, which takes effect for the 2025–26 school year, sets statewide standards for monitoring temperatures and adjusting athletic activities when heat risks are high.
Under the new rules, schools must use a wet bulb globe thermometer, a device that measures temperature, humidity, wind speed, and sun exposure, to determine heat safety levels. Depending on the reading, practices, and games may require more frequent breaks, reduced workout intensity, or even cancellation.
The move follows years of rising temperatures and several high-profile cases of heat-related illnesses among young athletes. OSSAA leaders say the policy ensures consistency across all schools and gives coaches clear guidelines to keep players safe.
Athletic programs across Oklahoma will now be required to train staff on the new safety measures and have equipment ready before the start of fall sports.
