One killed in interstate accident

Thursday, February 23, 2023 - A Fort Smith man was killed Thursday morning while attempting to exit Interstate 40 at Roland.


According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) report, 42-year-old Charles Bentley was driving a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse eastbound on Interstate 40 when he attempted to exit the off ramp at the 325 mile marker.


The OHP report states that Bentley's vehicle departed the roadway to the left, over-corrected to the right, and crossed over the roadway. The vehicle struck multiple trees causing the vehicle to spin and come to a rest in the roadway facing south.


Bentley was ejected approximately 10 feet from the vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by Pafford EMS from massive injuries.


The accident occurred at approximately 6:54 a.m.


Seatbelts were not in use at the time of the accident. Troopers noted an odor of alcohol in the report and listed the cause of the accident as speed.


The OHP was assisted at the scene by the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office, Roland Police Department Roland Fire Department, and Pafford EMS.
