Officer involved shooting ends in fatality


Saturday, May 14, 2022 - A Sallisaw Police Officer was involved in a fatality shooting early Saturday morning.


According to Sallisaw Police Chief Terry Franklin, the department received a call at 5:10 a.m. reporting that a man was in the road on Highway 64 west of Sallisaw and was jumping in front of traffic.


An officer reported to the scene and began interacting with the subject. The subject then instigated an altercation that forced the officer to draw and fire his service weapon.


It is unclear at this time how many shots were fired.


The subject was transported by ambulance to NHS-Sequoyah in Sallisaw where he perished from his injury.


Both the subject and the officer are members of a federally recognized tribe. Due to this, the investigation is being conducted by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation.


Franklin stated the names of the officer and the subject involved are not being released at this time.
