March 18, 2026 — Communities across the country are recognizing National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, an annual observance focused on educating young people about the real facts surrounding substance use and addiction.
The week, organized by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, aims to provide science-based information to help teens and families make informed decisions. Through community events, school programs, and outreach efforts, the initiative works to dispel common myths and encourage open, honest conversations about drugs and alcohol.
The importance of early education and prevention efforts can't be overstated. By giving youth accurate information about how substances affect the brain and body, communities can help reduce risky behaviors and prevent long-term consequences.
Locally, organizations and coalitions often use the week as an opportunity to host activities, share resources, and engage students in discussions about peer pressure, mental health, and healthy coping skills.
People Inc.'s Youth and Family Service Counselor, Lindsie Dyer, says having honest conversations is key.
Dyer stated, “This week gives us a chance to break down myths and really talk to kids about what’s real and what’s not. When young people have accurate information, they’re more confident in making healthy choices.”
Dyer explained that prevention efforts are most effective when the entire community is involved.
“It’s not just about one conversation; it’s about creating an environment where youth feel supported, where they can ask questions, and where they know they have trusted adults they can turn to,” Dyer added.
Community leaders emphasize that prevention starts with awareness. Encouraging conversations between parents, teachers, and young people can play a key role in building resilience and promoting healthy choices.
National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week continues to serve as a reminder that knowledge is a powerful tool in protecting youth and strengthening communities.
