Friday, July 18, 2025 — In a heartfelt act of service that reflects the Marine Corps’ core values of honor, courage, and commitment, two local Marine Corps League detachments have stepped forward to support families affected by the recent fireworks explosion.

The Joshua J. Ware Detachment 1403 of Sallisaw presented a donation of $1,500, while the Thomas A. Payne Detachment 1248 of Fort Smith contributed $2,000. The funds were formally given to the Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce for direct distribution to the impacted families.

“We felt it was our duty to help those who honor the freedoms we fought for,” Marine Corps League Commandant, Detachment 1403 Joe Wagg said, echoing a sentiment of service that has long defined the Marine Corps League.

The Sallisaw detachment is named in honor of Corporal Joshua J. Ware, a local Marine who gave his life during combat operations in Ubaydi, Iraq, on November 16, 2005, while serving with Battalion Landing Team 2/1, 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Known for his leadership, courage, and devotion, Cpl. Ware was posthumously awarded multiple commendations, including the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and a Combat Distinguishing Device for his actions during Operation Steel Curtain.

Throughout his service, Cpl. Ware led with distinction, particularly during urban combat training and real-world operations. His citations describe a Marine who led by example, provided outstanding leadership, and performed heroically under fire, even in his final moments, as he led his team into a fortified position held by enemy insurgents.

The Marine Corps League, established in 1923 and federally chartered in 1937, continues to uphold the values embodied by Marines like Cpl. Ware. With a nationwide membership of nearly 61,000, the League’s mission includes honoring Marine traditions, supporting fellow veterans and their families, and serving local communities.

As the community continues to heal, this generous donation from two Marine Corps League detachments stands as a reminder that the spirit of service never fades and that the legacy of Marines like Joshua Ware lives on through action, unity, and compassion.
