Sunday, September 28, 2025 - Students, families, and community members in Sequoyah County will join children worldwide in celebrating the benefits of walking and bicycling during Walk to School Day this October.
On Wednesday, October 1, Liberty Elementary and Eastside Elementary in Sallisaw will participate. Students, along with their parents or guardians, are asked to meet at 7:30 a.m. at The SK8 Place parking lot, 128 Sioux St., near Choctaw and Sioux. At 7:45 a.m., the group will begin walking together, traveling along Sioux St. to Fryar Dr., turning onto Ida Ave., and entering the school grounds near the cafeteria sidewalk. Regular walkers may also join from the RINK parking lot or continue their normal routes.
Vian Public Schools Walk & Roll to School Day is set for Wednesday, October 15. Participants will gather at 7:30 a.m. at the Simple Simon’s Pizza parking lot, 301 S. Thornton St., near the corner of Thornton and Vaughn. The walk will begin at 7:45 a.m., traveling from Thornton St. to Vaughn St., then onto Cherokee St. before heading straight to Vian School.
Gore Elementary School will also take part in Walk to School Day on Monday, October 27. Event organizers are finalizing the walking route and will share details with parents and students closer to the date.
At each event, water and healthy snacks will be provided by the TSET Healthy Living Program of Sequoyah County to give participants a healthy start to the day. Students are encouraged to wear their school colors to show their spirit, and for safety, parents and guardians are required to accompany their children.
Walk to School Day is coordinated nationally by the National Center for Safe Routes to School and locally by the TSET Healthy Living Program of Sequoyah County, with support from Cherokee Nation Public Health, OSU Extension Community Health, People Inc., and the Sequoyah County Health Department.
This initiative emphasizes the importance of physical activity, pedestrian safety, and fostering stronger connections between schools and their communities.
