High-Speed Pursuit Ends in Arrest on Interstate 40

Sunday, February 22, 2026 — A typical Sunday lunch quickly turned into a multi-agency pursuit this afternoon after a suspect fled from law enforcement, leading officers on a high-speed chase along Interstate 40.

According to Sequoyah County Sheriff Larry Lane, the incident began at approximately 1 p.m. when he was alerted by a citizen that a Vian Police Department officer had a subject at gunpoint outside a local restaurant where he was having lunch with his family.

Sheriff Lane responded immediately and observed the suspect fleeing the scene in a pickup truck. After entering his patrol unit, he caught up with the Vian officer, who had stopped the suspect again on Interstate 40 just east of the eastbound on-ramp. As officers attempted to assist, the suspect accelerated and fled once more, initiating a pursuit.

The chase continued for several miles at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Additional deputies from the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office and troopers with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol joined the pursuit.

During the chase, one trooper deployed stop sticks, but they were unsuccessful in disabling the vehicle. A semi-truck driver also assisted officers by slowing traffic ahead of the suspect. The pursuit ultimately came to an end when a second trooper performed a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI), successfully spinning the suspect’s vehicle. Deputies then boxed in the truck and issued commands for the driver to exit.

Sheriff Lane reported that the suspect briefly rolled down the window and waved at officers before rolling it back up and attempting to flee again in reverse. A deputy then fired one round, striking a front tire in an effort to disable the vehicle. A trooper then broke the driver’s window, and officers removed the suspect from the vehicle and took him into custody. Officials said the suspect was unclothed at the time of arrest.

One Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper sustained significant lacerations to his hand during the extraction and was treated for his injuries. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he is undergoing medical and mental health evaluations.

Investigators later confirmed the suspect had an outstanding felony warrant out of Muskogee County related to a hit-and-run case. Additional charges are expected to be filed in Sequoyah County in connection with today's pursuit. The incident remains under investigation.

“All agencies worked very well together today,” Sheriff Lane stated. “This incident is a reminder of how quickly situations can escalate in law enforcement. One minute, I was having lunch with my family, and the next, I had someone at gunpoint and got into a lengthy, high-speed pursuit. It underscores why training and readiness are so critical for all of us.”
