Driver receives minor injures in train collision

Tuesday, June 28, 2022 - The driver of a Sue's Recycling roll-off style trash truck, Johnny Rushing, 40 of Gore, received only minor injuries after being struck by a train Monday.

Sallisaw Fire Chief Anthony Armstrong said a call came in a 11:57 a.m. regarding the accident.

The back end of the roll-off trailer was struck by the train as the truck attempted to go over the crossing heading north. The truck was spun around and turned on its side. The fuel cargo train was empty and able to come to a stop within a relatively short distance.

Armstrong stated that Rushing was standing outside of his vehicle speaking with the train engineer when firefighters arrived at the accident. He was transported by Pafford EMS to Baptist Health in Fort Smith and admitted in good condition with head injuries, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP). The train operator was not injured.

The collision occurred at a Kansas City Railroad crossing at County Road 4640 and 1093 road two miles east of Sallisaw near the Sallisaw Sports Complex. The crossing is raised above road level and presents a steep incline for drivers.

The driver stated that he failed to see the train as he was crossing, according to Armstrong.

Kansas City Southern is in the process of installing railroad crossing arms at this location.
