Deadline to Change Party Affiliation Approaches

Wednesday, February 11, 2026 —Oklahomans who wish to change their party affiliation must submit their request by March 31, according to Sequoyah County Election Board Secretary Ruby Brunk.

Voters can update their party affiliation online through the OK Voter Portal at oklahoma.gov/elections/ovp or by completing a new Voter Registration Application.

Brunk reminds voters that they cannot change their party affiliation from April 1 to August 31 during even-numbered years.

“If we receive your request after March 31, state law requires us to hold it and process the change in September,” Brunk said.

Oklahoma recognizes three political parties: Democratic, Republican, and Libertarian. To vote in a party’s primary election, a voter must be registered as a member of that party. Independent voters may participate only if a party officially opens its primary to them; currently, no party allows independent voters to participate in its primary elections. More information is available on the State Election Board website at oklahoma.gov/elections.

All registered voters, regardless of party affiliation, may vote for any candidate in a general election.

Voter registration applications can be downloaded from the State Election Board website or obtained from the Sequoyah County Election Board.

For questions, contact the Sequoyah County Election Board at 918-775-2614 or by email at sequoyahcounty@elections.ok.gov. The office is located at 110 E. Creek Ave., Sallisaw, and is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
