Monday, May 3, 2021 - The Board of Sequoyah County Commissioners declared May 2-8 as a week to honor Oklahoma Home and Community Education on Monday.
Oklahoma Home and Community Education Inc. (OHCE) is a statewide, county-based organization that partners with Oklahoma State University and the OSU Cooperative Extension.
Started in 1935 as home demonstration clubs, OHCE has worked tirelessly to make families more resilient. Early OHCE lessons dealt with food preservation, family relations, finances and more. The group has also showed its ability to mobilize in response to a pandemic. When COVID-19 created a massive need for face masks, OHCE members from around the state put in about 74,427 hours into making almost 75,000 masks to keep Sooner State residents protected.
There are about 3,200 OHCE members statewide. Working in a cooperative effort, OHCE members and Extension Educators identify local issues facing families. These issues become the basis for OHCE educational programming and efforts are made to help families solve those problems.
