Monday, October 3, 2022 - The Cherokee Nation is once again partnering with the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper to provide a free, one-year subscription to Cherokee Nation citizens who opt into the program through the tribe’s online Gadugi Portal system.
The Cherokee Nation Free Phoenix for All Program provides a free newspaper subscription to Cherokee households in all 50 states as well as Canada and U.S. territories, and delivered newspapers to more than 190,000 Cherokee households in 2022.
Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. said he and Deputy Chief Bryan Warner wanted to offer the service again to ensure citizens are engaged and informed.
“When we began this program a year ago, we knew that keeping Cherokee citizens informed about the COVID-19 pandemic and providing them with relevant, factual and timely information was critical to how well the Cherokee Nation is able to recover and rebuild,” Chief Hoskin said. “Deputy Chief Bryan Warner, the Council and I are proud of this program and excited to continue it in the coming year. When our Cherokee traditions and lifeways were being threatened in the 19th century, Indian Country’s oldest independent newspaper was a crucial source of information to Cherokee citizens and played a key role in the survival of our Nation. Today, the Cherokee Phoenix continues to provide important information to Cherokee citizens all across the world. The Cherokee Nation Free Phoenix for All Program will ensure all of our citizens have easy access to tribal activities, events and resources. I encourage all Cherokee citizens to sign up on the Gadugi Portal for another free subscription.”
To continue to receive the paper in 2023 for free, Cherokee Nation citizens must visit gadugiportal.cherokee.org to opt in. After logging in, citizens will be presented with a pop-up box to opt in or they can opt in by updating their communication preferences on the Gadugi Portal’s home page.
Free subscriptions are limited to one per household, and the deadline for Cherokee Nation citizens to opt in is Nov. 30.
The program utilizes federal funding under the American Recovery Plan Act as part of Cherokee Nation’s COVID-19 Respond, Recover and Rebuild plan.
