Sunday, March 29, 2026 — Residents looking to clean up unwanted items around their property will have the opportunity during the City of Sallisaw’s upcoming “Chunk Your Junk” event.
The cleanup day is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will take place at the Sallisaw city buildings on Quesenbury Street. The event allows residents to dispose of certain household items that are easy to handle and haul away.
City officials say the event is designed to help residents clear out junk and waste from their property conveniently and responsibly. “Chunk Your Junk” days are held periodically throughout the year and are announced in advance to give residents time to gather items for disposal.
The event is limited to residential customers who live within the city limits of Sallisaw. Residents participating in the event will be required to provide a current utility bill as proof of residency. City staff will be on-site to supervise the disposal process.
Participants will be responsible for unloading their items into the provided dumpsters and separating materials into the appropriate containers.
All items must originate from the resident's property and be easily handled by one person. Items must fit in a standard half-ton pickup truck bed without side rails, though trailers up to 16 feet long without side rails will also be allowed. City officials note that all loads are subject to being turned away based on contents or weight.
Residents are encouraged to bag items when possible and separate all metal materials before arriving.
Items that will be accepted include bagged leaves, small plants, metal, wood or lumber, landscaping materials, furniture, bedding, cans, bundled cardboard, and small appliances—provided any coolant or refrigerant has already been removed.
However, several items will not be accepted, including brush, construction debris, shingles, commercial trash, hazardous waste, free-flowing liquids, batteries, paint, oil, chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, cleaning products, pharmaceuticals, propane or butane tanks, appliances with refrigerant systems still connected, and tires or heavy rubber materials.
City officials encourage residents to review the guidelines before attending to help ensure the event runs smoothly and safely for everyone involved.
