Oliver terminated by city after losing CLEET certification

Tuesday, February 1, 2022 - The City of Sallisaw released a statement Tuesday, February 1 stating that they had terminated the employment of Sallisaw Police Lt. Billy Oliver effective January 31, 2022.

“On January 25, 2022 the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) issued a Final Order of Revocation regarding the police officer certifications of Lt. Billy Oliver. State law requires all permanent, full time law enforcement officers to be certified by CLEET. Since CLEET has revoked the certifications of Lt. Oliver, he is no longer eligible to perform the duties of a Sallisaw police officer. Based on this Order, the City of Sallisaw terminated Lt. Oliver’s employment on January 31, 2022.”

The statement was released and signed by Sallisaw City Manager Keith Skelton.

Oliver had been fired previously in 2020 due to accusations of excessive force. He was reinstated by order of a mediator but only if he were eligible to carry a weapon. At that time Oliver was reinstated but immediately placed on paid leave.

After revocation of his CLEET certification, Oliver’s employment was terminated once again.
