More warming centers opening due to frigid temperatures

Sunday, January 14, 2024 - Various warming stations have been set up throughout the county to assist residents in staying warm as below-freezing temperatures persist in the area. These locations play a crucial role in providing a safe and comfortable environment for those in need.

In the Belfonte area, the Sally Byrd community center has opened its doors to community members seeking a warm place to go.

The town of Gore has temporarily turned its municipal courtroom at the police department into a warming center for those in need. The warming center is located at 1201 N. Main St. in Gore. If you need a warm place to stay, contact the Gore police department at 918-774-6334.

In Sallisaw, a warming tent was constructed on Saturday, offering warmth to those in need. The warming tent is located in the Sallisaw Farmers Market parking lot next to the Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library.

In addition to the warming tent, bathrooms, food, and further support can be found just across the street at the SHED, also known as "Soup-n-Souls." The SHED is located at 100 E. Cherokee in Sallisaw. Residents in need can contact Harold Powell at 918-774-3120.

Another Sallisaw location assisting with shelter is Sherry’s Farmhouse Kitchen. The restaurant has opened its doors 24 hours a day through Tuesday night to ensure every policeman, electric worker, or person without shelter has access to a place to warm up and receive a hot meal.

The Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library and the Muldrow Public Library are also serving as warming stations during their regular scheduled hours.

The Stanley Tubbs Memorial Library is open Monday–Thursday 9 a.m.–7 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.–6 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m.–2 p.m.

The Muldrow Public Library is open from 9 a.m.–6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and from 9 a.m.–7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m.–1 p.m.

Library hours may be adjusted on Monday, January 15, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
