Sallisaw man faces a theft by deception charge

Wednesday, November 16, 2022 - A felony arrest warrant was issued Nov. 7 for a Sallisaw man charged with theft by deception.

Scottie Ray Scott, 38, could face up to a year in prison, a fine of up to $1,000 or both.

On Oct. 6, a Roland police officer was contacted by a Roland bank official who said Scott had opened a checking account there on Sept. 27 and deposited $150. Since the account was opened, however, the official said, numerous checks were deposited then returned as either closed or stop payments by Oct. 1.

During that time, several other transactions had occurred. In all, the bank reportedly lost $4,124.

The bank official said that when a check is deposited at the bank, the amount of the check is immediately available in the checking account. Once the checks were deposited, he said, Scott would go to an automated teller machine and take the money out of the account.
