Monday, October 2, 2023 - A Sallisaw man who was spotted driving erratically Sept. 9 was hit with three charges, an affidavit shows.
Clifford Ray Frye Jr., 50, was charged with driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, a felony, as well as two misdemeanor charges for transporting an opened container of alcohol and driving with a suspended license.
According to court records, around 4:30 p.m. Sept. 9, a Sequoyah County sheriff’s deputy was traveling west on U.S. 64 near the Sallisaw Sports Complex when the deputy saw a gold Ford Thunderbird exit the complex in front of the vehicle in front of him, forcing the driver to swerve to avoid striking it.
The deputy immediately activated his lights and sirens to stop the vehicle near U.S. 64 near the El Toro restaurant in Sallisaw.
When he approached the car, the deputy spotted an open bottle of Fireball cinnamon whiskey and when Frye was asked how much he had drank, he said he’d had 3-4 drinks that day.
On speaking with Frye, his speech was noticeably slurred, and when he exited his car, he had to hold onto the vehicle for balance and also failed a series of field-sobriety tests and was arrested.
